SABINE DEVIEILHE returns to the Vienna State Opera as Soeur Constance

After her brilliant debut as Marie in La Fille du Régiment back in January 2018, Sabine Devieilhe returns to the Vienna State Opera as Soeur Constance in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites - one of the most haunting operatic works of the 20th century. The final scene with the ever thinning "Salve Regina" as the guillotine falls is an unforgettable one . . . In 1794, 16 nuns were executed under the Jacobins in Paris after staying true to their vows. Francis Poulenc brought this to the stage as a gripping psychological chamber play, now conducted by Bertrand de Billy in the revival of Magdalena Fuchsberger's production.

Nowadays, there is probably no one who could interpret Soeur Constance better than Sabine Devieilhe, convincing audiences with her radiance and warmth of voice, her almost childlike naivety and at the same time a deeply believable dignity.

In the words of the artist herself, Sabine Devieilhe considers the role of Constance: "not just another part for a light soprano, who adds a naive, lighter colour to the dark surroundings of the plot. I realised that Poulenc's true feelings and insights into the human condition manifest themselves in Constance."
