MICHAEL SCHADE | International Baroque Festival Stift Melk

Since 2014, Michael Schade has been the artistic director of the International Baroque Festival at Melk Abbey, held annually at Whitsun. Every year, he creates new impulses with changing themes that address historical, spiritual or social topics. This year's festival has the title ‘Maria bewegt’ (Mary moves) and highlights the role of Mary, the Mother of God, in the history of music.

In the opening concert, Michael Schade can be heard in the tenor role in both Johann Sebastian and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Magnificat with the Concentus Musicus under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado.

The concert will be broadcast live on Fr, 6 June 2025, 20:00, on Ö1 and on Whitsunday, 8 June 2025, 20:15 on ORFIII at Erlebnis Bühne.

On Whit Saturday, he will perform the programme ‘Map of a Family’ - Maria Barbara in the Shadow of Bach's House in the atmospheric setting of the collegiate church at night with baroque specialists Max Volbers (recorder) and Sebastian Wienand (harpsichord).  The ‘Melker Marienlied’, one of the treasures of the abbey library from the 12th century, which will be set to music by Johannes Schachtner and premiered on this evening, promises to be a special highlight.
