No stranger to this repertoire (with notable acclaimed recordings to date featuring Handel arias with the likes of Pygmalion and Le Concert d’Astrée), Sabine Devieilhe now appears in the role of Cleopatra, a part that lies at the very heart of the coloratura soprano repertoire. Renowned for her technical brilliance, clarity of articulation and expressive refinement, she is particularly well suited to Cleopatra’s emotional spectrum, from playful seduction to profound vulnerability. Her exceptional command of ornamentation and her sensitivity to text make her a perfect interpreter of Handel’s vocal writing, where virtuosity and character are inseparable.
Composed in 1724 for the King’s Theatre in London, Giulio Cesare in Egitto was inspired by episodes from Roman history, notably Julius Caesar’s campaign in Egypt and his encounter with Cleopatra. Drawing on classical sources and the operatic conventions of its time, Handel fashioned a drama in which public power and private emotion are closely intertwined.
Under the direction Francesco Corti, the ensemble has become one of the most renowned period ensembles on today’s concert scene, with numerous accalades (Opus Klassik, Diapason d'Or, BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award, etc) to their name.
Gaining already acclaim following their premiere in Vienna at the beginning of the month, Sabine Devieilhe stood out once again: “In her generation, there is hardly a soprano who would sing more silvery, sweetly, and in such exceptionally shaped phrases. Every line Devieilhe sings deserves its own review.”
