KATRIN WUNDSAM sings Turnage's "Twice Through The Heart" in Hamburg

Three different female stories are at the heart of this concert: a mythological princess, a criminal and a heroine of liberty in trousers. Beethoven’s adventurous exploration of the tale of Leonore / Fidelio resulted, among other works, in the “Leonore Ouverture No. 2”, which embodies a transformation of his symphonic thinking into a prelude pointing to the story preceding the actual drama. Mozart’s brilliant concert aria “Ah, lo previdi” – “Ah, I foresaw this” – is an aria of vengeance sung by Andromeda, lamenting the supposed death of Perseus. Markus Poschner conducts the Philharmonic, bringing the concert season to an end with Marc-Anthony Turnage’s “Twice Trough the Heart”: the dramatic scene for mezzo-soprano and small orchestra recounts the true, tragic story of a woman who has murdered her husband. With intriguing orchestration and based on a highly expressive text by Jackie Kay, Turnage creates an impressive sonic landscape whose vocal interpretation is entrusted to the Austrian mezzo-soprano Katrin Wundsam.
