FLORIAN BOESCH in Handel’s "Orlando" at Theater an der Wien

Florian Boesch, who has celebrated many a success at the Theater an der Wien – most recently as Saul in Handel’s eponymous oratorio (“Florian Boesch, who enthralled the audience with the power and intensity of his portrayal” Heute, 18.01.2018) and in Berg’s Wozzeck – now returns to the house in George Frideric Handel’s Orlando, singing the role of Zoroastro. Orlando, the tale of raging Roland, a popular story set to music by many composers, was expanded in the libretto used by Handel to include the figure of the magician Zoroastro. He warns the war hero Orlando of the consequences of love, but when the latter loses his mind as a consequence, only magic can provide the antidote. Orlando proved one of the most ground-breaking operas by Handel – directed by Claus Guth and conducted by Giovanni Antonini, it is here interpreted by masters of their craft.
