ADRIAN ERÖD | Die Fledermaus at the Vienna State Opera

Rarely has a work made such an immediate impact in Vienna as Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus. From its premiere in 1874, the piece was performed with the highest frequency, and in 1894 it was honoured by the Court Opera, remaining in the repertoire almost continuously ever since, and since 1900 almost always on New Year's Eve. The most famous of all operettas takes a light-hearted and playful approach to erotic and social deception, bringing bourgeois facades to life and offering political and social commentary.

KS Adrian Eröd, a favourite with Viennese audiences and a long-standing member of the ensemble, can be seen in this annual revival of Otto Schenk's classic as Dr Falke – the actual driving force behind the plot, whose intrigues ironically expose the social roles, moral concepts and double standards of the characters.

Last but not least, as the conclusion of the Johann Strauss anniversary year 2025 and as the highlight of the comprehensive TV programme focus at the turn of the year, ORF III's ‘Erlebnis Bühne’ will broadcast this year's Fledermaus live with a time delay on Wednesday, 31 December, at 8:15 p.m. and live at 6:00 p.m. on Ö1.

With these four performances at his home theatre, Adrian Eröd heralds an artistically promising new year, which will take him to the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome for the first time in March as the music teacher in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos.
