The French soprano Sabine Devieilhe returns to the Opéra Comique for a major role debut in Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucie de Lammermoor, which premieres on 30 April 2026.
The new production is based on the rarely performed French version, which Donizetti himself adapted for Paris and which presents the bel canto classic with a distinctive linguistic and dramatic colour.
Devieilhe takes on the title role of Lucie Ashton – a part of extreme virtuosity. In the run-up to the production, the soprano emphasised in an interview published by the Opéra Comique: “Bel canto is the ideal setting in which the voice can unfold.” For her, Lucie embodies an unusual romantic heroine: isolated, entirely left to her own devices.
In the French version in particular, the character, deprived of her female points of reference, appears lonelier than ever – almost floating in a world full of tension. Thus, in Devieilhe’s interpretation, the vocal brilliance of bel canto becomes a means for a particularly intimate, psychologically intense portrayal.
