Paris – When Handel's Ariodante premieres at the Opéra national de Paris on 16 September, one of France's most celebrated opera singers, Sabine Devieilhe, takes to the stage. The soprano takes on the role of Dalinda, bringing her incomparable blend of virtuosity, clarity and emotional intensity to the stage.
Devieilhe has long been a stand-out name in the opera world: she is known for her luminous high notes and her ability to master even complex coloraturas with apparent ease. After successes as Lakmé, Queen of the Night, Zaide and Bellezza in Handel's Il trionfo del Tempo, she can now be heard in a role that requires particular psychological nuance: Dalinda, both victim and accomplice in Polinesso's intrigues.
Roberto Carsen's production, a revival from 2023, provides the ideal setting for this. Under the baton of Raphaël Pichon, Handel's baroque drama unfolds with intense colourfulness. While the title role and Ginevra form the tragic main axis, Devieilhe lends unexpected depth to the seemingly secondary Dalinda – making her the secret key figure of the evening.
With this production, the singer from Normandy confirms why she is one of today's leading Baroque interpreters. Taking place in Paris, Devieilhe performs in this case to her home audience. Having won several Victoires de la Musique awards, she continues to inspire not only with her technical brilliance, but also with a stage presence that makes every character humanly tangible.
This production promises to shed modern light on Handel's dramatic music and complex characters – and thus to become an unforgettable opera experience.
