Patricia Petibon might have been born to sing the mysterious figure of Mélisande, whose background and identity remain unfathomable. She has perfect diction, making every word of this incredibly beautiful and symbolic text by Maeterlinck intelligible; AND she uses her voice, her instrument, in a masterful way: whether gentle and supple, steeped in melancholy, or pale and vibratoless, only to break into rich colours at a moment’s notice. In this, it resembles the characters in Debussy’s opera: the protagonists seem lost in a fog, living through an endless dream, which is reflected by the hypnotic music as if in a cloudy mirror.
With Iván Fischer conducting the Budapest Festival Orchestra, this will doubtlessly be a very special occasion.
