In the latest edition of ‘L'opera ritrovata’, a concert series dedicated to forgotten operas and oratorios by the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra Basel, the ensemble will perform two concerts in Basel and Amsterdam featuring Domenico Cimarosa's L'Olimpiade, which premiered in 1784. Although historically very successful, but is rarely performed today.
Today, Cimarosa is mainly remembered for his instrumental compositions and as the famous author of highly successful ‘opere buffe’ such as Il matrimonio segreto. However, his forgotten opere serie are no less interesting from a music-historical perspective, and L'Olimpiade also contains treasures that only a top-class ensemble of singers – including Olivia Vermeulen as Licida – can adequately master.
The Dutch mezzo-soprano, who has cemented her reputation as a sought-after Baroque performer in recent years with a wide variety of orchestras and ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and the Bach Collegium Japan, is now also appearing for the first time with the Basel-based ensemble conducted by Andrea Marcon in this Swiss and Dutch premiere of the work.
