In a letter to his librettist, Friedrich Kind, Carl Maria von Weber wrote in jubilation following the world premiere of their joint opera Der Freischütz of having: "Hit the bull's eye". The audience at the premiere in Berlin in 1821 enthusiastically celebrated the new work, which would soon become the epitome of German romantic opera with its emotionally charged and gripping music. As one of the most popular operas in the German-speaking world today, Der Freischütz can be experienced on the floating stage of the Bregenz Festival for the first time.
Nikola Hillebrand, Mauro Peter and David Steffens as Agathe, Max and Kaspar make their debuts at the festival, the stage of which has been transformed into an inhospitable German village shortly after the Thirty Years' War, under the direction of Philipp Stölzl (director) and Enrique Mazzola (musical director), a leading team that celebrated previous success with their Rigoletto in 2018 and 2019.
