At her upcoming Wigmore Hall recital, Nikola Hillebrand joins renowned pianist Malcolm Martineau in a programme devoted entirely to the lieder of Franz Schubert.
The programme features a fine selection of Schubert's best-known lieder and takes listeners on a journey through a multitude of moods. The recital opens with “Im Abendrot” (“In the Evening Glow”), setting a tone for the evening with its simple intimacy. “Ganymed” expresses hymnal enthusiasm for becoming one with nature, while “Der Rosenkavalier” (“The Knight of the Rose”) is a passionate ode to love, while "Der Musensohn" exudes a dance-like lightness and youthful freshness. "Frühlingsglaube" brings hopeful, blossoming confidence, before "Die junge Nonne" provides a dramatic contrast in which religious ecstasy and passion merge. "Lachen und Weinen" adds a particularly delicate touch, capturing the changeability of human emotions in just a few bars.
Nikola Hillebrand's clear, expressive voice and Malcolm Martineau's nuanced playing create a recital that allows the poetic depth and timeless beauty of Schubert's music to be experienced anew.
