The night of the summer solstice has always been imbued with a special magic, which William Shakespeare used to create a delightful comedy full of magic and romantic entanglements. It boldly breaks down class barriers by making the nobility part of a farce whose characters are drawn from a variety of sources, some of them ancient: Whilst Duke Theseus of Athens prepares for his wedding, all hell breaks loose in the neighbouring forest: young lovers flee there from and to one another, a goblin goes astray whilst administering love potions, the fairy queen falls in love with a donkey – and it is only amidst the greatest (romantic) chaos that the fairy king restores order. Yet the dream lingers on …
When Benjamin Britten created his most popular work, he made only subtle changes to his famous compatriot’s original and relied on a large, enthusiastic ensemble. The result was an opera that continues to fascinate to this day with its delicate balance of fairy-tale lightness, psychological depth and musical sophistication, and is regarded as a milestone of modern musical theatre.
As Demetrius, Nikita Ivasechko makes his debut at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe in the current premiere series, performing a role with which he was already heard at the Graz Opera last season.
