JULIAN PRÉGARDIEN returns to the Bavarian State Opera for Handel's Alcina

In July 2026, Julian Prégardien returns to the Bavarian State Opera to sing the role of Oronte in the eagerly anticipated new production of George Frideric Handel's Alcina. The production premieres on 13 July at the Prinzregententheater, with stage direction by Johanna Wehner and musical direction by Stefano Montanari.

Oronte is one of the most multifaceted tenor roles in Handel's opera. As Alcina's confidant and Morgana's lover, he navigates a complex emotional landscape of jealousy, vulnerability and loyalty. Handel endowed the character with a series of expressive arias that demand both virtuosic agility and refined lyrical sensitivity—qualities for which Julian Prégardien is internationally acclaimed.

This engagement further strengthens Julian Prégardien's long-standing relationship with the Bavarian State Opera. Earlier in the current season he appeared there in concert, and he now returns as part of the Munich Opera Festival for this new production. The company has played an important role in his career for many years: in 2017, he made his acclaimed role debut there as Oberon in Weber's opera of the same name.
