Following his most recent appearances on the operatic stage as Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, tenor Julian Prégardien now turns his attention to another role perfectly suited to his slender timbre and effortless ornamentation: Don Ottavio in Mozart’s “dramma giocoso” Don Giovanni.
No stranger to the role, his previous most recent appearances were in Salzburg. First in his role debut at the Salzburg Mozart Woche in 2023, he took part in the semi-staged production under his now regular recital partner András Schiff and his Cappella Andrea Barca. Praised for his lied-lyrical timbre, which fit wonderfully into Schiff’s sound concept, he crafted his “Dalla sua pace” with wonderful delicacy. In summer 2024, he joined the revival of Romeo Castellucci’s production. While the challenge back then was the extremely varied number of costume changes, he found just as nuanced tonality in his role.
This time round, audiences can expect a visually dynamic, modern staging by David Hermann, featuring constantly moving sets with sliding walls and spinning floors, led musically by Vladimir Jurowski conducting the Bayerisches Staatsorchester for a performance that balances dramatic drive with stylistic nuance.
We wish the whole cast a huge Toitoitoi for this run of performances!
