JEREMY OVENDEN as Emperor Tito at The Grange Festival and the Mozartfest Würzburg

When the Mozartfest Würzburg presents Mozart’s final opera, La clemenza di Tito, in the Kaisersaal of the Würzburg Residenz on 12 and 13 June, the title role of the Roman Emperor Titus—a character defined by Mozart less by power than by moral greatness—finds a perfect interpreter in Jeremy Ovenden. Together with the French period ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, conducted by Christophe Rousset—with whom he shares a fruitful artistic collaboration—Jeremy Ovenden previously appeared in 2021 for the ensemble’s Würzburg opera debut as Idomeneo and subsequently as Ferrando in Così fan tutte. With Titus, Jeremy Ovenden now returns to a central role in his repertoire, a part with which he has also appeared in recent years at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, the Theater an der Wien, the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Ghent, as well as at the Vienna Festival, winning over audiences and the international opera press alike.

Supported and complemented by a world-class ensemble of soloists, the two evenings will unfold the complex interplay of loyalty, love, and power that forms the dramatic core of the opera, illustrating that true greatness can also lie in forgiveness.

The production will also be presented beforehand at The Grange Festival in Hampshire, southern England, one of the most prestigious summer opera festivals in the UK, whose stately country estate provides a fitting setting for Mozart’s tribute opera.
