To His Dearest Little Cousin

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his cousin Maria Anna Thekla Mozart corresponded regularly. Their letters remained hidden from the public for many years because they were at times obscene, often scatological and anal-erotic, and frequently rather vulgar. Mozart writes, for example: "My sister sends you a thousand cousinly kisses, and your cousin sends you what he is not allowed to give you.” In the first critical complete edition of the letters, published in 1914, all passages considered offensive were omitted. Their flirtation simply did not fit the image of Mozart that prevailed at the time.

In this program, Isabel Karajan and Christiane Karg explore this lesser-known side of Mozart, creating a portrait of the conflicted musical genius who, throughout his life, was burdened and constrained by external expectations and pressures.
