“The most exciting piano quartet of the present!” | Onlinemerker
Founded in 2009, the Mariani Piano Quartet might be “the most exciting piano quartet of the present” (onlinemerker.com) and has made a name for itself as a stylistically assured and passionate piano quartet since its founding.
The Mariani Piano Quartet first came to greater attention at the German Music Competition in 2011. After the individual members of the ensemble had celebrated success as soloists at the competition, the ensemble also won a stipend as well. Since then the ensemble has been invited regularly to major festivals, including Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein, and has appeared on great European stages such as Berlin’s Philharmonie, the Beethoven Haus Bonn, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Philharmonie in Luxembourg.
Upcoming highlights of the 2022/23 season include, in addition to the long-awaited CD sequel to their Brahms & Gernsheim project, concerts in northern Italy, the debut in the Vienna Konzerthaus and a return invitation to the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
Numerous radio recordings by NDR and SWR document the high quality of the Mariani Piano Quartet’s live performances. Time and again, it seeks to straddle the divide between classical literature and unknown repertoire. Thus, critics praise the musicians’ “esprit and passion”, “liveliness and joyful playing”, “piercing intensity” and the “life and soul [they pour] into every note”.
Today an impressive discography documents the Mariani Piano Quartet’s work. In addition to classics such as the piano quartets by Robert Schumann and Gabriel Fauré, it includes absolute rarities such as the piano quartets by Martinů and Enescu, and new discoveries such as works by Emilie Mayer and Friedrich Gernsheim. For its recording Brahms & Gernsheim Vol. 1 the ensemble received a Diapason d’Or as well as the “Tokusen” of the Geijutsu Record Store, a highly renowned distinction in Japan.
The name “Mariani” is derived from the Italian luthier Antonio Mariani from Pesaro, the builder of Barbara Buntrock’s viola (ca. 1650).
