SABINE DEVIEILHE as Zerbinetta in Aix-en-Provence

The spirited musical comedy Ariadne auf Naxos – to many, the best collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal – recounts the wishes and dreams of a young composer which are confronted with the rough reality (of the theatre), tells of broken female hearts and of a light-hearted way to take life and love.

Zerbinetta’s aria is a mixture of technical bravura and capricious, ironic ambivalence, in which the composer and his librettist Hofmannsthal take their stage fantasy to extremes. The role of Zerbinetta gives Sabine Devieilhe an opportunity to play out her qualities as a singer and actress.

On this evening, she embodies the programmatic counterpart and opposite of Ariadne and her truly breath-taking soprano. Even in the dizzying heights of her ten-minute coloratura aria, her voice remains crystal-clear and beautiful. Cheerful yet with dynamic tension, the coloraturas pearled from her lips. She not only seduced all the men on stage, but also the audience.
