Iris Vermillion regularly appears on the stages of the foremost European opera companies, such as the Deutsche Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opera Stuttgart, the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and the Teatro alla Scala, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Teatro Municipal of Sao Paulo. She rose to international fame by singing Sesto/LA CLEMENZA DI TITO, Dorabella/COSÌ FAN TUTTE or Cherubino/LE NOZZE DI FIGARO as well as various operas by Handel such as SEMELE and GIULIO CESARE; further she added more dramatic roles to her repertory including Clairon/CAPRICCIO, Octavian/DER ROSENKAVALIER, Komponist/ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Charlotte/WERTHER, Giulietta/LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, Prinz Orlofsky/DIE FLEDERMAUS, Gräfin Geschwitz/LULU, Fricka and Waltraute/RING DES NIBELUNGEN, Brangäne/TRISTAN UND ISOLDE and Adriano/RIENZI. Lately she was celebrated as Herodias in Strauss‘ SALOME, as Klytämnestra in Strauss‘ ELEKTRA, as Hexe in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, as Küsterin in Janacek’s JENŮFA or in Weill’s AUFSTIEG UND FALL DER STADT MAHAGONNY.

Iris Vermillion’s stunning debut in the title role of Schoeck’s PENTHESILEA in Dresden won her the coveted German Theater award “Der Faust” in November 2008.


During the season 2017/18 Iris Vermillion performs at the Teatro Colón, the Vienna State Opera and the Opera Graz. In May 2018 she makes her role debut of Stolzius’ mother in Zimmermann’s DIE SOLDATEN at the Teatro Real in Madrid. Furthermore, the season 2018/2019 includes appearances as Klytämnestra/ELEKTRA at the Vienna State Opera and the Oper Leipzig, a new production of Richard Strauss’ SALOME at the Oper Graz as well as further performances of Peter Eötvös’ ORATORIUM BALBULUM in Pécs, Budapest und Munich. 


Iris Vermillion has always been careful not to neglect her expansive concert and recital repertory and appeared with prominent conductors and orchestras with works that range from ancient music up to the 20th century. Amongst others she has worked with the Berlin  and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orkest, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestras of Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. She gave recitals at the Musikverein Vienna, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the opera Frankfurt, as well as in Bern, Zaragoza and Madrid.


Iris Vermillion has sung under the direction of renowned conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Semyon Bychkov, Vladimir Jurowski, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Christian Thielemann, Christoph von Dohnányi, Vladimir Fedosejev, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs, Cornelius Meister, Philippe Jordan, Marek Janowski, Kurt Masur, Georges Prêtre, Helmuth Rilling, Donald Runnicles, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir Georg Solti und Marcello Viotti as well as in the younger past with Pablo Heras-Casado or Sylvain Cambreling.


During the festival summer 2016 Mrs. Vermillion participated in the world premiere of Peter Eövtö's recently composed oratorio HALLELUJA - ORATORIUM BALBULUM along with Daniel Harding and the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Salzburg Festival. Revivals of this oratorio followed in Vienna, Budapest, Zurich and Cologne.


Iris Vermillion has made well over thirty highly acclaimed recordings, including works by Beethoven, Bellini, Donizetti, Goldschmidt, Graun, Liszt, Loewe, Mahler, Mozart, Pfitzner, Schulhoff, Schumann, R. Strauss, Ullmann, Wagner, and Zemlinsky, for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Decca, Philips, Harmonia Mundi, CPO, Erato and BMG.
